Ra !

Ra Paulette has created these carved cave houses in the desert in New Mexico. He works with hand tools such as shovels, pick axes and scrapers. It looks like pure mediation to me, what bliss he's created. A temple, a sacred space.

hand tinting

this wood cut was inspired by building round structures with Tony Wrench, roundhouse pioneer, he is awesome ... This is his guest house which features in Lloyd Kahns (another dude) upcoming book by Shelter publications.

chocolate & tahini

This weekend the river flooded the marina and me and my neighbours were marooned for a day. As I watched the river rise and zoom past my kitchen window I mixed up a banana cake. It was one of the cosiest feelings ever, the fire was roaring, the wind was howling, rain lashing and for a moment the sun shone as I whisked the eggs into the sugar mix, mashing up the bananas and adding some flour and cinnamon. The smell of a cake baking is pure comfort.
Living on a boat makes you feel the weather that little bit more. Your boat becomes a part of you, a bit like a car or bike does...you know what i mean..you give it a name, it has a personality!?! I certainly know when it's raining, when it's cold and how cold before I even get out of bed. Yeah I'm not the best at getting out of bed when there's a frost on the window and my breath turns to mini fog...but there's nothing like having a fire to warm you...and when you can bake a cake and share it everything feels alright.

The cake above is my chocolate and tahini mix...make your usual chocolate sponge and add this delicious frosting... Tahini + Sugar = Halva flavoured Heaven! I decorated with sesame seeds, cocoa powder, and chocolate curls.

A Tahini Icing
225g cream cheese
160g icing sugar
a good spoonful or two of tahini
pinch of salt
(could add a tsp of cocoa powder for colour, add little more cream cheese if you do)

Solstice Greetings

Solstice approaches! 22nd December. Now that is exciting.
Meteor showers, The Geminids still continue in the night sky...In fact lie down and look up at the sky tonight...the clouds will part...I hope you'll get to see them. They'll continue to shower with up to 50 per hour until 17th Dec, my Birthday! What a lovely present from the universe , Thank You Cosmos. Cosmos is the opposite of Chaos, but I think they're the same thing. The harmonious order of the universe is chaos.
Merry Yule!

Spike Island

This is Spike Print studio where I do all my printing and etching
It's been a crazy year for me...a huge change, relocating and moving to live on a boat. It has brought many challenges, setting up a new network, finding where everything is, boat stuff, finding work, or shops to sell my Art...for those of you who have relocated and set up a new life on your own you'll know what I mean! Sometimes it has felt like it's one thing after...but when i reflect I have done quite a lot with my year, it's hard to see it when you've not stopped!

kissing trees coming to life

This is my latest copper plate in the process of being drawn... tomorrow if i finish today I'll bite it at Spike Print Studio... I love how they look at this stage and it's not often you get to see them like this for long. When the plates are bitten the black ground is removed after.

"Women whose chief companions are the forms and forces of outdoor Nature retain in their souls far more of the Pagan fantasy of their remote forefathers than of the systematised religion taught at a later date..."

Thomas Hardy, Tess of the d'Urbervilles 1891

Sol

Sol is my nephew...it seems only yesterday we were dancing to beastie boys and songs about kandinksy in the kitchen... When he was born over 15 years ago (!) he literally was the sunshine in my life, still is and Yes I'm a very proud Aunty El. Here he is on his BMX at a skate park next to the ocean on the North Coast of Cornwall. I love the way they choreograph their tricks together. He is getting real good.

Love Boat

A new Artist to the family, this picture is by Edie, my lovely niece. What a gorgeous picture. I love the heart she has drawn on the boat, it's giving me ideas for some new paintwork.
