Gibson / Martelli (igloo) - VISITOR

28 January - 1 April 2012 (free)

"Inspired by the icy mountains of the Canadian Rockies, VISITOR is an interactive installation by BAFTA nominated artists Bruno and Martelli. Encountering a life size replica of a trappers' cabin in our Exhibition Gallery, you are invited inside to explore a virtual, frozen other world... You will navigate through the eerie wilderness using a combination of physical motion and cutting edge video game technology"

I went to see this exhibition on a snowy sunday afternoon...it's worth a visit and it's free! There is something really sinister in the virtual environment the artists have created...there are no people present, only you and the ghostly, lonely landscape... is it a comment on how we are using technology to have 'virtual' experiences of a real world?? There is magic in an man made virtual world...but I'd prefer to actually row a real boat in the Rockies!

I picked up this postcard in Camilla's bookshop.

Pleasant

Pleasant is a new cafe in Lewes, East Sussex owned and run by painter Sara Grieswood. This is where i learnt a lot about cooking lovely food,  Sara is a good teacher of baking and inspirational cooking. It's a cafe and food store with a unique environment.  Food is cooked and baked in the open plan kitchen and the veg and most of the fruit (citrus from Spain) are sourced from local organic or biodynamic farms, Ashurst Organics, Fletching Glasshouses, Plaw Hatch. There is local honey, free-range and biodynamic eggs, local milk (Goodwood Organic and Northiam Dairy), cheese (High Weald Dairy) and bread baked by Firle Bakery, Flint Owl and the Gypsy Bakers. Also available are stone baked pizza cooked outside in a clay oven .
I really enjoyed working in an environment where things are considered, there is thought to support the local community and stock food ingredients that not only taste good but are good for you YUM YUM YUM

earthship & permaculture

Earthship

This weekend i went on a two day Permaculture intro course with the Brighton Permaculture Trust http://www.brightonpermaculture.org.uk/ . It was a great weekend, I learnt so much, got inspired and met some lovely people. It's really great to know there are more and more people out there who are into creating a more sustainable way of living. The course touched on the basic principles of permaculture design - earth care, people care and fair share.  It's fascinating to see the connections and possibilities of designing a complete system of living that with careful planning and common sense can support itself with low impact on the environment and maximum quality of life. It really struck me that in order for a new system to work community is so important.
I want to learn more!
Bryn and Hedvig led the course, here is Hedvig's  blog http://hedvigmurray.co.uk/2012/01/31/introduction-to-permaculture/
rain is collected from the roof and then filtered through a system that runs through the indoor plant beds. an ideal place to grow herbs, salads etc

Тіні забутих предків

i recently watched Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, directed by Sergei Parajanov in 1965. ...A tragic story of love set in the Carpathian mountains showing a detailed portrayal of Ukranian Hutsl culture. The costumes in this film are amazing - i couldn't find any pictures online so you'll have to watch the film! beautiful yet haunting . you can find info about the film and director here http://www.parajanov.com/shadowsofforgottenancestors.html

i love

the individual ego develops along the same lines as the universe, love being a search for a centre which will allow the dynamic synthesis of the individual's potential....love is an ontological well-spring of progress in so far as it is truly union and not confiscation.   - a dictionary of symbols

This is a great new website I'm on for creative professionals to showcase their work. It was created by Graphic Artist Nick Sellek.
