tom paine

today i delivered some work to TOM PAINE Printing Press, in Lewes, 151 the high street... which apparently is the centre of the cosmos. Peter Chasseaud runs the shop and studio, with a working 18th century common press. His work and shop are pictured below:  TO SHOW THE COMPLEXITIES OF LETTERPRESS TECHNOLOGY AND THE CRUCIAL IMPORTANCE OF THE PRINTED WORD IN DISSEMINATING IDEAS.  my country is the world, and my religion is to do good , Thomas Paine, Rights of Man 1791

busy bee

So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. - Edward Abbey
it's too lovely outside to be doing things like blogs... must get the sun on my skin before it disappears for another 6 months

peace camp

a couple of weeks ago i went to an art installation called PEACE CAMP, simultaneously held on the same weekend at different coastal locations around the U.K. celebrating landscape and love poetry.

. open only at night till sunrise, you walked a mile or so down a lantern lit muddy track to one of my favourite beaches in this area.. and into a field full of glowing tents, with a sound piece of spoken word  ... the stories i heard seemed to be quite cynical and sad :( , but it was a really comforting atmosphere to just lie down amongst the glow and listen, like having a bedtime story read with the sound of the ocean waves in the background. this night i even took a midnight swim in the sea, the stars were out, on the horizon the ferry was on it's way to france, the coast guard cottage had a warm flicker of candle light in the window and i felt as though i was in one of my etchings

louis avebury

i woke up this morning with the name 'Louis Avebury' in my head... it isn't a persons name, at least i don't think it is. avebury is a place i really should have been to being the largest neolithic henge monument. last night i was etching a new plate of a landscape in wales with a stone circle in the distance, so maybe that's why the name was in my mind. i found this film made by derek jarman in 1971, the soundtrack is by experimental post-industrial band Coil. i love the dreamy quality of super-8 film.
i will over the summer visit this place
